A giant mobile advent calendar created to tell the stories of domestic abuse victims who are an inspiration to others.
The artwork, called Our House – Behind Closed Doors , has 25 windows and is touring Bedfordshire with the hashtag #LookAtMeNow and features the positive stories of survivors.
Our House – Behind Closed Doors is Bedfordshire’s contribution to The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence an annual international campaign that kicks off on 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until 10 December, Human Rights Day.
The 16 Days of Action falls under the leadership of the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General’s UNiTE by 2030 to End Violence against Women campaign (UNiTE campaign) calls for global actions to increase awareness, galvanize advocacy efforts, and share knowledge and innovations.
Our House – Behind Closed Doors has been created as part of the call to action against gender-based violence and features positive stories about both male and female domestic/sexual abuse survivors from Bedfordshire.
The purpose of the house is to inspire and motivate people that are experiencing it now to get help and know that there is support out there. However it also carries with it an important message, that we need to change the view of what people perceive victims to be.
Our House – Behind Closed Doors
The stories in the calendar show “courage” and that victims can go on to be “strong, professional, and successful”.
We are raising awareness of abuse… of victims that have gone on to achieve remarkable things in their lives.
“It can be devastating, but you can get over it.”Naz Knight
The tour started in Bedford on 25 November and visits various locations during the day. Every evening the calendar goes back on display at The Galaxy Centre in Luton.
However, Our House is an Advent Calendar, so here online from the 1st December, we will be opening one door, per day for 25 days. revealing one positive story behind each door all the way up till Christmas. Each one of these stories a Christmas Miracle.
